The Line: Miami (OH) (+245) vs. Buffalo Bulls (-320)
Three college football games on tonight and this is the one I will be watching. Miami of Ohio (1-0) is knocking on the door of the Buffalo Bulls (1-0) once again in a great MACtion packed game. Spoiler alert: both defenses are prone to giving up big plays.
Miami of Ohio may be without starting quarterback Brett Gabbert. Fear not! Back-up quarterback AJ Mayer saved the day last game. Beating a Ball State team with a cornerback who is headed to the NFL. AJ Mayer completed 66.7% of his passes. Averaging 8.8 yards per completed pass. Including throwing for three touchdowns! Keep in mind Mayer did not expect to play in that game. His leading target was Jack Sorenson who reeled in 7 catches for 139 yards. Averaging 19.9 yards a catch! Miami of Ohio has three running backs that can cause headaches for a short-handed Buffalo Bulls defense tonight. Davion Johnson had the most carries on the team last game. Zach Kahn their power rusher punched in two touchdowns from short distance. Kevin Davis also was also in the mix. Expect that trend to continue.
Buffalo Bulls have a talented quarterback in Kyle Vantrease. Vantrease completed 64.7% of his passes against Northern Illinois University in his last game. Averaging 10.3 yards per completed pass. He did throw one interception which looked like a wounded duck from the moment it left his hands. Outside of that he can scramble and cause headaches for this Miami of Ohio defense. The most impressive player on Buffalo’s offense is running back Jaret Patterson. The guy is a hard-nose runner. I watched him run a guy over on the goal line last game and looked as if he made him cry. Patterson punched in two touchdowns and one was a boomer for 56 yards!
Buffalo Bulls have a highly talented receiver in Antonio Nunn. Nunn caught 6 catches for 102 yards against NIU. Averaging 17 yards a catch. Hauling in one touchdown in the Bulls 49-30 win. Nunn has another chance for a big game tonight with a favorable match-up.
Being able to compare both quarterbacks for any game is crucial to my pick. Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Vantrease has a lot of bright spots. The downside is his mechanics don’t look all there yet. Don’t be fooled by the 49 point total from last week. NIU carelessly turned the ball over to Buffalo five times! When you really look at what Kyle Vantrease did, 11/17 passing the ball, 175 passing yards, one pick and one touchdown. None of those statistics are dominate or eye-popping.
AJ Mayer thrust into the staring role was 16/24 passing the ball, for 212 yards, and three touchdowns is scary for a Buffalo Bulls defense. I can’t praise Mayer enough for playing his team into a win against a favored Ball state team. I’ve seen a lot of people say take (+7.5) on Miami of Ohio (ATS) tonight. If you are confident Miami of Ohio will keep this game close enough to cover the spread—with that same line of thinking—why won’t they win outright? Play the UNDER you say? In a MAC game? I say come back down to earth.
Both of these defenses are back of the pack statistically speaking. I see plenty of offensive talent here. Two big offensive lines. I’m seeing points, points, points!
