NFL Week 9 MNF: New England Patriots vs. New York Jets – Preston’s Best Bets

The Line: New England Patriots (-450) vs. New York Jets (+350)

If I asked someone who is not a football fan to pick two NFL teams out of thirty-two that potentially a few million people would see on Monday Night Football . They wouldn’t have picked these two teams being blindfolded. I’ve watched dice games that are more exciting than the New York ‘stinking’ Jets. The Patriots don’t have much room to talk either; which is fine since Bill Belichick is a man of few words.

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton beat Covid-19 and now he is looking to beat the Jets. A lot of the betting trends lead us to believe the Patriots will cover the spread. Mind you, many of those trends are reflecting the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era and not the present Cam Newton-Bill Belichick era. Newton is completing 66% of his passes while averaging 7.3 yard every completion. Newton is (5-2) on Monday Night Football in his career. Newton is also (8-2) against AFC East opponents in his career. One thing that worries me about the Patriots is all the injuries that have plagued this team. If the patch-work run game can help Newton out that worry will quickly evaporate.

The Jets will try to set the tone early because if not this game is going out the window fast. I am a Joe Flacco fan but I believe he is past his prime. The Patriots defense is ranked 7th in pass defense. Their isn’t one player on the Jets that I look at and see him dominating his match-up tonight. The Jets will try running with La’Mical Perine early on and if that doesn’t work they will switch to Frank Gore.

My Favorite Bet: New England Patriots -9.5 (-120).

Stand up for this one. I am willing to sweat it out if I must. The ROAD team has won the last 4 out of 5 times between these two. The last time these two teams met the Patriots walloped the Jets 33-0. Are the Jets better now then last years Jets?

Side Bet: Cam Newton OVER 1.5 Passing Touchdowns (+106).

If you think you are getting sucked into the juice here; I raise the point; to start at quarterback for Bill Belichick you have to be a pass first quarterback. I point you to Tom Brady. Referencing their most recent quarterback draft pick Jarrett Stidham as a pass first quarterback. Along with the third string quarterback Brian Hoyer. Neither are prolific running quarterbacks. Cam Newton being able to run for a first down or a touchdown is simply an added bonus to Belichick’s offensive scheme.

Side Bet: Cam Newton OVER 201.5 Passing Yards (-110).

The Jets defense ranks 29th in passing yards surrendered in the NFL. Surrendering 282.8 passing yards a game. I am almost convinced you could put a scarecrow out there for Cam Newton to throw to and the Jets defense still couldn’t stop him.
