The Line: Packers (-285) vs. 49ers (+250)
Packers were given a beat down last week and will look to use that as a pivot to beat a floundering 49ers team. Nick ‘Freaking’ Mullins is starting at quarterback in place of the injured Jimmy Garopolo. Either way Mullins is not a legitimate threat to the Packers defense. The 49ers will be in full dink-n-dunk mode tonight.
Packers are a huge time of possession team; ranking third in the NFL. Rodgers and company will look to keep the 49ers defense on the field and wear them down by the fourth quarter. The only way the 49ers avoid this is by hitting the big plays and utilizing the screen and play-action to keep the Packers defense reeling. I think the Packers defense is a poor-tackling unit. With that being said, the 49ers defense looked awful against the Seahawks this past Sunday. Allowing four touchdown passes by Russell Wilson. Quick turn around for a banged up 49ers unit that is expected to slow a red-hot Rodgers and Davante Adams combo.
For me this task is too tall for the 49ers to climb and their chances to cover the spread will become slimmer every minute their defense is forced on the field. The Packers defense knows how to get pressure on the quarterback. Although, the Packers are one of the fewest blitzing teams in the league; Mike Pettine will have to dial it up tonight. The big downside for the Packers is all the confusion covid-19 has brought to the running back position. Tonight Rodgers will once again show why Packers fans need not fret.
My pick: Packers cover the spread -6.5 (-106).
My pick: Robert Tonyan Jr. – Any Time TD Scorer (+170). Tonyan is Rodgers second favorite target right now. Every defense in the NFL knows Davante Adams is Rodgers number one target. Tonight the 49ers have planned for that and I still don’t think they can stop Adams. With Adams drawing a lot of attention Tonyan will find room to roam in the secondary. Tonyan has been used in the red zone effectively this season as well. Tonyan has brought in five touchdowns this season through seven games. Averaging 13.9 yards a catch. Leading me to believe he has a great chance to cash for us tonight.
