Quick Takes On Main Event
Gaethje vs. Khabib will either be a Khabib wrestling display or a Gaethje highlight finish. Gaethje has never attempted a takedown in his career but has defended 80% of takedowns against him according to UFCstats.com. Tony Ferguson regarded as one of the best pure strikers in all of the mma community; was significantly out struck by Gaethje in his last bout. Khabib is not known as a boxer or kick boxer. Khabib is purely a great wrestler with good enough hands to set up his takedowns. Gaethje has an extensive background in wrestling and trains out of Elevation Gym in Colorado which; I attribute his four-fight winning-streak in many ways. Elevation has Gaethje on another level in the fight game. All fighters who have been coming into the UFC from Elevation have had incredible cardio and been outlasting their opponents. I believe Khabib will rely on his wrestling too much and Gaethje will have trained well enough to withstand the bull rush until he can deliver a devastating finish.
Quick Takes On Co-Main Event
Cannonier vs. Whittaker is an amazing style match-up that could easily be a Main Event. Cannonier fights with a switch stance which can cause problems for the orthodox fighting style of Whittaker. One thing Whittaker has going for him is his improved wrestling which he was able to display against Darren Till that I feel went unnoticed. Cannonier has a four inch reach advantage over Whittaker. In Cannonier’s last three fights he has KO/TKO each opponent in brutal fashion. Whittaker was actually rocked and dropped by Till in their fight with an elbow. Although Whittaker went on to win the fight in a five-round unanimous decision; I can’t help but get the feeling Whittaker is no longer the fighter who is looking to finish fights. That heavily favors Cannonier who is on a tear looking to make a statement and advance to fight Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya. For these reasons I am fading Whittaker and rolling with Cannonier to take this fight to a decision victory.
